With marijuana products becoming more available (and more popular), some consumers have begun to wonder if what they are getting is “the good stuff.” Whether you’re using cannabis for its reported health benefits or just to experience a great high, it’s important to make sure you’re getting a high-quality product. After all, one of the key components of a great experience using weed starts with the source. Keep reading as the experts at Green Sativa explains more about what to look for when determining what good cannabis looks like.

What to Look for In Good Weed

When it comes to cannabis flower, there are several things to consider to determine if it’s high quality. Generally speaking, high-quality good weed is referred to as “top-shelf bud” or “Private Reserve.” Other slang terms for good weed include “loud,” “fire,” and “dank.” While there are many things to consider when it comes to determining the quality of cannabis flower, the key components to look for include aroma, bud structure, trichome density, and how it feels.

Aroma of Good Weed

The aroma of a marijuana bud is one of its most notable features. High-quality good weed features a distinctive, strong, and pleasant aroma. In fact, a good-smelling flower is immediately and unmistakably identifiable to most regular users. The strong odor of a high-quality flower is often referred to as “dank” or “loud.” While all good weed will have a distinct and strong smell, there are several subcategories of aromas that vary depending on the strain, including skunk, diesel, and pine.

Bud Structure of Good Weed

The structure and appearance of a cannabis bud is another tell of its quality. Carefully cultivated cannabis flower will vary in composition and color, so you will need to keep this in mind when shopping for different strains. Sativa strains tend to be light and fluffy, while indica-heavy strains will have a denser flower structure. If the flower is rock hard, this can be a sign that the growers used plant growth regulators, which can cause it to have a bad taste. On the other hand, an overly fluffy flower can indicate it did not receive enough light and may not have grown to its full potential.

Just like produce at the grocery store, the color, and vibrancy of weed can give a clue to its quality. While the colors will vary depending on the strain, many high-quality buds will be deep green with vibrant orange or red hairs. Some strains will also show other colors, such as deep purple and bright blue.

Trichome Density

In addition to structure and color, another important aspect of cannabis appearance is trichome density. Trichomes are very small and look like white fuzzy crystals on the surface of the flower. These appendages contain the compounds that determine the flower’s aroma, flavor, and effects. The number of visible trichomes acts as an indicator of how potent the flower will be. More visible trichomes mean stronger highs and more potent therapeutic outcomes. While it is not necessary, using a magnifying glass may help you see the trichomes on the flower more easily.

Feel of Good Weed

While the look and smell of a cannabis flower should give you a good indicator of its quality, another way to double-check that your product is good is by feeling it. Top-shelf cannabis flower should be slightly spongy and sticky when gently squeezed. Ideally, a good flower should be in the “Goldilocks zone,” not too dry or wet. If the flower is too dry, it can crumble apart too easily. Too wet, and it is at risk of containing mold or mildew, which is not always visible on the surface. Cannabis that is too dry will crumble easily and just generally feel dry. Look for a flower where the stems and buds easily snap without crumbling away.
