What Is Shatter ?
Shatter is a type of cannabis concentrate with a smooth, glassy appearance. It gets its name from its brittle nature. Shatter was one of the first cannabis concentrates to be produced as a butane hash oil (BHO), and it’s been around for roughly 10 years now.
As far as chemical composition, shatter is similar to wax, sap, and those other soft BHOs (whether you call them butter, badder, or something else). The main difference is that shatter comes in thin, hard sheets instead of soft masses. The final form of shatter all comes down to how it’s made.
What is Shatter Made of?
The process for making shatter is very similar to the process of making wax (and many other types of cannabis concentrates, too). First, the plant material is packed into the tube of a closed-loop extraction system. Once it’s there, a solvent (typically butane, but sometimes propane or something else) is washed over the cannabis to separate cannabinoids from the rest of the plant material.
The cannabinoids and solvent combine to make a THC-rich solution, which can then be moved from the plant material into the next part of the extraction system. The only downside here is that the desirable THC and terpenes are now mixed with butane, which is not fit for human consumption. That’s why the oil has to be cleaned with a gentle heating.
The heating part is important because it has to be hot enough to burn off the solvent, but not hot enough to burn off the THC. At this stage, shatter is finished by being spread into a thin layer on a tray under a vacuum. As the butane evaporates and is sucked away, the resulting cannabinoids harden into the final product: a hard sheet with up to 80% THC potency.
How to Use Shatter
Because it is so physically hard compared to other concentrates, it can be a bit more difficult to work with shatter. Many customers say it’s worth getting shatter because of its longer shelf life, and there are many ways to enjoy it once you learn how to manipulate it.
