What is the Entourage Effect?

The world loves and celebrates cannabis so much because of the head highs, relaxing qualities, and the feeling of connectivity you get with everyone else. Cannabis has a flurry of amazing and intricate strains of sativa, indica, and hybrids with their unique aroma, flavor, and energy. This is because of “the entourage effect.”

What is the Entourage Effect?

It has nothing to do with Jeremy Piven and everything to do with the entourage of terpenes and cannabinoids that combine forces in each cannabis plant. Cannabis is a plant that contains many chemical compounds called cannabinoids. They attach to receptors in your frontal lobe and produce the intended effects of the cannabis you lit up or consumed. The most common cannabinoids are THC, which is responsible for the “high” feeling, and CBD, which is non-psychotropic but mellowing. Cannabinoids aren’t the only part of the plant though. Every time you smell or taste certain scents and flavors in weed, those are the results of the terpenes. Terpenes are the compounds of the cannabis plant that give off certain flavor and olfactory components. When a strain smells piney or gassy, or when it tastes citrusy, those are the terpenes.

When you partake in a weed product, you are immersed in the swirl of both terpenes and cannabinoids that play off each other to give specific effects. That is the entourage effect. One of the basic examples of the entourage effect is the dynamic duo of THC and CBD. Both compounds work together to give you an intense high and to level it out over time. By themselves, individual compounds only have one effect. When they are bonded together, it augments the sensations. Think of it like a Lego set. Every block adds to the overall structure and profile of the final product. It’s why some highs are more mellow than others, because of higher CBD, and why certain highs don’t affect short-term memory loss. Still, other combinations are reported to be great sleep aids. Science hasn’t confirmed any health benefits, but we still are affected differently and more intensely by certain strains than others.

What Products Have The Entourage Effect?

Essentially all cannabis products have the entourage effect. Unless it’s pure CBD or THC, it will incorporate the entourage effect. Any traditional cannabis product will have a mix of terpenes with THC and CBD. CBD-only products tend to only have CBD in them and no terpenes. Adding CBD to other THC products or terpenes has been shown to enhance relaxing or soothing qualities too.
